I’m talking about good ole fibrous vegetables or as I call them “Free Foods”!  Of course the key ingredient in this large family of foods is FIBER (Soluble & Insoluble) and even though it is non-digestible it’s still KING of the macronutrients.  When you consume a high fiber meal plan your body systems are governed quite well, without fiber, well just reverse all of the above benefits and what you see is what you get!

Fiber is an indigestible carbohydrate & enzymes are not capable of breaking them down through digestion therefore they are not absorbed into the bloodstream, cannot be used as energy, and are eliminated while helping you excrete waste.

2 Types Exist- Insoluble & Soluble
Insoluble fiber acts as a sponge absorbing its weight, multiple times, in water.  This causes swelling within the intestine resulting in an increase in bulk in the stool triggering peristalsis (a powerful intestinal muscle contraction) efficiently eliminating toxic waste and alleviating some digestive disorders. Insoluble fiber and the water it retains promote larger, softer stools that the digestive system can pass quickly and easily. Insoluble fiber moves intestinal contents at a fast pace through the bowel, thus decreasing the length of time the bowel wall is exposed to potential carcinogens reducing your risks for colon cancer. Non-caloric insoluble fiber can be found in fibrous vegetables!
Soluble fiber is found in small amounts in fruits, vegetables, seeds, brown rice, barley, oats, and oat bran. It can also be found without a calorie consequence in fibrous veggies!  Soluble fiber acts as a natural stool softener while working to prevent or reduce the absorption of certain harmful substances into the bloodstream to include cholesterol, fat, and triglycerides. It is proposed that fiber alters absorption of the latter in the large intestine. Some studies suggest that soluble fiber produces a reduction in LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels without decreasing HDL ("good") cholesterol levels.  Because stools are easier to pass, less straining is necessary, and this can help relieve hemorrhoids. Soluble fiber assists in managing blood sugar and one of many theories is that the natural gums present in soluble fiber delays the emptying of the stomach therefore the absorption of glucose is much slower. Further, soluble fiber may dilute carcinogens or possibly bind or inactivate them in some way thus reducing your risk for developing colon cancer! Other types of cancer that are linked with “overnutrition” may be prevented by a high fiber diet and include breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer.

High Fiber Foods are also foods that your body must work harder at trying to digest. Fibrous vegetables, particularly raw ones, help boost metabolism. Your body works extra hard to extract the vitamins and nutrition from the fiber in fibrous veggies, therefore you burn a significant amount of energy AKA calories.

Most fibrous veggies are truly “FREE” meaning you can eat them in unlimited amounts because it takes more energy for your body to try to digest them than the food actually contains in calories to begin with.  Celery, green beans and raw broccoli, are a few veggies that require more calories for your body to digest than they actually contain. These are often referred to foods that create a calorie deficit.
